Used cars may well see an increase in sales in the near future, and more buyers may be young adults.  Graduation is upon us and that means there are a lot of high school seniors preparing for college, and a lot of recent university graduates are getting ready to step into the professional world. For a majority of them, the purchase of a reliable used vehicle will be part of those preparations. This is especially true where a parent or guardian is providing the funds or acting as a co-signer. In many cases, of course, affordability will be a concern as well, so these customers are likely to be looking for vehicles new enough to have a great deal of life remaining, but old enough to boast a lower price tag. Using crash test results, consumer performance reviews, and long-term reliability information from Consumer Reports, Forbes put together a list of some of the top-rated safe and reliable 2013 model year used cars. These are the used cars graduates and their parents will be looking for in your inventory!

In sedans, the 2013 Honda Accord is one of the favorites, offering not only reliability and safety, but lower gas mileage as well with its economical 4-cylinder engine. Similarly, the 2013 Hyundai Elantra provides a surprisingly quick 4-cylinder engine, and has the bonus of a stylish look that many young adults still find appealing. If your dealership serves an area where manual transmissions are popular, the Elantra can be found with a stick-shift. The 2013 Kia Optima was also rated highly by Forbes, and in fact was listed as one of their favorite picks. Not only is it sturdy and reliable, it also offers a roomy interior. Also on the list is the Subaru Impreza. It is available as both a sedan and hatchback, and, if your dealership is in an area with heavy winter snows, the Impreza is also available in all-wheel-drive. For those looking for something a little more compact, the Honda Civic was another of Forbes’ top choices for safe and dependable used cars.

Of course, sedans are not every graduate’s first choice for used cars. Whether they enjoy weekends camping, hiking, and fishing, they need extra space for supplies or friends, or they are nontraditional college graduates with families, SUVs and crossovers will better suit many potential customers. Some of the most dependable and safe 2013 model subcompact SUV crossovers include the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, a popular and somewhat stylish choice, and the Subaru Forester, which is dull to look at but anything but to drive. The popular Subaru Outback also made the cut, providing reliability and safety with reasonable off-road capability.

Any and all of these used cars are likely to be among what customers are searching for this summer, especially if they are recent graduates or are providing a recent graduate a used car. Therefore, independent and BHPH dealerships should certainly keep these models in mind when bringing in inventory! These safe and dependable used cars are popular choices and will make great recommendations when a new graduate visits your dealership looking for something reliable and cost-effective.
